Witne ss the beauty, mystery, and energy of India as the State Theatre in New Brunswick brings to the South Asian community the unique dance styles of Mallika Sarabhai and the Darpana Performing Group on Sunday October 16, 2005 at 2pm.
The daughter of a renowned dancer, Mrinalini Sarabhai and a highly respected scientist, Vikram Sarabhai, Mallika Sarabhai has reflected the best of intellectual curiosity and artistic elegance. Mallika Sarabhai and the Darpana Performing Group bring its audiences an evening of varied styles and ideas that form the contemporary dance in India. The pieces range from comedic to abstract and touch on a mixture of aspects of today's society. The music is also varied, as it ranges from traditional and popular composers like L. Subramanium and Indian Ocean to the acoustic creations from the dancers themselves. Highlighting the performance is one of Sarabhai's favorite pieces, Tattakuzkhi, in which the dancers speak from the stage with only the music of a single ghatam, a percussion mud pot, playing in the background.
